"An unholy union of the scrappy, DIY scene that blossomed out of Austin, TX in the ’90s and a distinctly American strain of trash auteurism. Extremely crass and utterly charming, the film adeptly balances the clever and the idiotic.”
– Betsy Cass, SIFF

“Did somebody say world-motherfucking-peace?” The year is 2007 and after being arrested for vandalizing Fresno’s finest public telephone, teenaged delinquent in the making Raphael (Luke Wilcox) is let off the hook with only 50 days of community service. However, the catch is that he must move in with his drug-dealing cousin (Darius Autry), who is accused of selling WMDs to [name redacted] by Officer Williams (Danielle Evon Ploeger, COUNTRY GOLD), a delusional, unhinged, low-level police officer with a grudge. Unfortunately for Raphael, who would much rather listen to screamo and spend time with the new cool emo girl (Khali Sykes), he finds himself entangled with an FBI sting operation, a suicide, Steve Irwin, and the kitchen sink!

There is a wild energy to RATS! that can only be described as an evil Sponge Bob flash animation bad-tripping off of laced Xanz that you watched on NewGrounds while your parents weren’t paying attention, back when you were 12 years old. That sort of underground unpredictability that leaves you at the edge of your seat, completely incapable of anticipating where the story will turn! Channeling the filth of films like STREET TRASH and THE GREASY STRANGLER, co-directors Maxwell Nalevansky and Carl Fry prove they have the chops to stand tall amongst the legends of absurdist comedy! 2007 is truly back, with needle drops from bands like I Set My Friends On Fire, Thursday, and From First To Last taking you back to the glory days of listening to a Warped Tour compilation album on your iPod Touch. With a wacky cast of side characters incarnated by the likes of Jacob Wysocki (UNFRIENDED), John Valley (THE PIZZAGATE MASSACRE), Luxy Banner (LOUSY CARTER), and Neville Archambault (the final performance by the 13 CAMERAS star), the world of RATS! feels alive as it pulsates with vomit-inducing imagery and a trash can full of laughs! – Vincenzo Nappi
