The myth of the two lakes at the feet of Bulusan Volcano on Luzon Island is canon folklore in the Philippines. Using a backlit paper-cut technique that evokes the Filipino shadow-puppetry called carillo, animator Gary “Dudz” Clotario tells this tragic tale from the perspective of Mampak, the monstrous instrument of the true villain’s treachery. Part of the Folktales Animated Project, a collaboration between Tuldok Animation and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. – Rupert Bottenberg
